Colours of the week candles

When we rolled candles at Candlemas, we rolled coloured beeswax sheets this year for an idea I had in mind. I found a fallen branch and drilled seven holes to hold the candles. We added the candles based on the Waldorf colours of the day.  This is what I go with:

Monday, moon, violet, rice
Tuesday, mars, red, barley
Wednesday, mercury, yellow, millet
Thursday, jupiter, orange, rye
Friday, venus, green, oats
Saturday, saturn, blue, corn
Sunday, sun, white, wheat
I have placed our candle holder in the centre of our dining room table and we light the appropriate candle each day for blessings.  It is a great way to help the littler ones learn the days of the week, and we try to eat a food of the same colour as the day we are on each day.

We also added our festival or month gnome beside it.  Since Valentine's day has just passed we have had our Valentine gnome standing next to the candles and I also had the idea of making little weathermen based on the snowman I knitted when we had snow.  I am in the process of knitting a blue snowman shaped weatherman for rainy days, a grey man for overcast days, a red man for festival and celebration days and a yellow man for sunny days.  We will change the weatherman each day, and the gnome each month.  I have knitted six of the monthly gnomes so far.
I have also found it really prompts us as a family to discuss the day/month/weather and it looks so cheerful too!

  1. A really nice idea. I love the different colours for different days. Days slip by so easily. We have a weather and season chart, which I made eons ago and the children still enjoy changing. Your snowman is very sweet.

  10. This branch is so beautiful! And I love your little weather man. I have been trying to hang monthly decorations on our living room fan, but we still have up our Thankful Leaves from November. Not a bad thing to leave up all year as it is a lovely reminder, but I haven't managed to keep up with my hopes!

  11. what a nice idea, I love the branch candle holder!
Im not sure if i ever did get back to you when you asked how my silky chickens were getting on (forgive me if I did already, i wrote the comment a few times but I dont think I got it to post) We absolutely love our silkies! We ended up with two roosters and a hen. The little hen is such a darling character, she walks straight up for cuddle and never runs away when I want to pick her up. Im looking forward to dying her cute little eggs at easter time! We gave one rooster to a friend and the other we kept. He pecks a bit so has to stay in the cage when I look after children but other than that hes just as easy to pick up and goes to sleep when we rub his wattle. Ive never had chooks so friendly! They also free range even the veggie patch and rarely damage any plants except chamomile which they took a real liking to. I hope yours are getting on well too!

  12. Hello my dear friend

So lovely to see your creativity. I hope our children will remember all we do. I have loved the traditions of candle making with mine over the years. I love the idea of the colours of the week. Love the tree stump holder.

    A happy evening to you
    Lots of love

  13. Hello beautiful friend, thank you for the sweet letter you wrote. I shall write soon. I was going through your recent posts. The boys all had haircuts, they've grown so much. It does look cold but I see you've been making lots of candles for warmth. They are pretty. The little snowmen, yours and the boys are precious. Hopefully the boys will get to make one this year if we get to France for the winter. We will be closer to you then. Thinking of you and your beautiful family. Sending much lovexxx
