Here are some of our insect/reptile discoveries from early February. Where did February go?? Didn't hang around very long!

| Blind snakes from the compost heap. These live underground and are harmless. They feel beautifully smooth! |

| We found a sweet tiny baby chameleon. So small compared to one of our big chameleons! |

| Sol's new pet - an axolotl. These creatures have such beautiful faces. They remind me of Chinese dragons. |

| A type of mopane worm. Lots of them! They look very prickly but are very soft and can be handled. |

| And they are edible! |

Our children were fascinated by the Axolotl at the aquarium we went to, would be lovely to have one at home x

Hi Gina, that little chameleon was so sweet! Those worms live on the mopane tree. There is another variety which is mostly white with different coloured spots that is part of the local staple diet. In the supermarkets, there are huge tubs of these dried worms. Women and children mostly collect them. Here, they are then mostly dried and then later soaked and then cooked in a sauce and eaten with maize type porridge 'sadza'. We have tried it but didn't enjoy it very much but I doubt we did a good job cooking it in a way to make it tasty.
ReplyDeleteThe Axolotl is a lovely pet to keep. Easy to look after. We feed him fish food and an occasional worm.
