Our scarecrow

Look at the sweet little friend we created.  The boys love him and run out several times a day to check on him.

First, we went out for a walk with a sack each and filled the sacks with straw.  We stuffed a pair of old jeans with straw.  Leo and Sol were so delighted they raced about the garden with the straw stuffed legs.  I tacked the shirt onto the jeans.  We stuffed the shirt.  More delight and more running about!  We found a short garden cane and stuck that into the shirt to give support. Filled a pillowcase with straw until we got the shape and size we wanted.  Drew on a cheery face and stuck the pillowcase head firmly onto the garden cane to serve as his neck. Added hair and hat and old frog patterned wellies we had kept just for our scarecrow.

Once the boys had had a good play with Scarecrow we tied him to our garden post so he won't fall down or blow away in the wind.  We made him for the fun of it rather than to work hard and chase birds away.  He actually looks like a real little boy in the garden and I look twice when he catches my eye!

Dingle Dangle Scarecrow

When all the cows were sleeping
And the sun had gone to bed
Up jumped the scarecrow
And this is what he said!
I'm a dingle, dangle scarecrow
With a flippy floppy hat
I can shake my hands like this
And shake my feet like that
When all the hens were roosting
And the moon behind the cloud
Up jumped the scarecrow
And shouted very loud
I'm a dingle, dangle scarecrow
With a flippy floppy hat
I can shake my hands like this
And shake my feet like that
When the dogs were in the kennels
And the doves were in the loft
Up jumped the scarecrow
And whispered very soft
I'm a dingle, dangle scarecrow
With a flippy floppy hat
I can shake my hands like this
And shake my feet like that
I'm a dingle, dangle scarecrow
With a flippy floppy hat
I can shake my hands like this
And shake my feet like that.

Lots of great fun!

  8. Hi magiconions
Your 'Friday's nature table is a lovely idea! I am sure your children will really enjoy making a scarecrow. MIne were jumping with joy! They are so proud of him and when their friends come to visit, they rush down to show them. We went to the charity shops so the boys could choose just the right clothes they wanted for him too!
    Best wishes
