I made some modelling beeswax a few weeks ago. (I came across the idea in the book, 'Autumn, nature activities for children' Kutsch and Walden.) The children have been enjoying it. I find the boys prefer to model with this as it is more pliable than the shop bought modelling beeswax although it doesn't have that same sheen and smooth finish. If anyone has managed to achieve this, I would love to know how. I adore the natural colour. It took me a few attempts to get the right consistency - adding more lanolin and then a bit of olive oil and then more beeswax to finally get it how I wanted it.
Recipe I used.
Around 2 cups of beeswax
4 teaspoons lanolin
I think I ended up adding 3 tablespoons olive oil.
Melt the beeswax at a very low temperature in an old pan. Once melted, stir in the lanolin and olive oil well. Pour into a lined baking tray and let the mixture cool until it is hard. Once cooled cut into strips. Try modelling with a strip. If you find it too hard add a bit of lanolin or oil and if it is too hard add more beeswax.
It looks great - I really need to have a go at this, beeswax modelling would probably keep mine occupied for hours (based on how long they'll play with play dough).
ReplyDeleteThat's a great idea. Mine always lose interest in the shop bought stuff so quickly because it's so hard to work.
ReplyDeleteWhere do you get the Lanolin from?
It was well worth making! I got the lanolin from Baldwins. You would only need a small tub. I got a large tub as I use lanolin to lanolise babe's woollen nappy wraps. It lasts for ages.
ReplyDeleteI've just discovered your blog. What a treat! Oh I love this idea. We have a big wheel of beeswax. My seven year old loves the tablets and they are so dear. I'm going to give it a go. Kelly, your blog is so lovely and full of great inspiring ideas. How do you lanolise woolen nappy wraps? Is it possible to lanolise other woolens as well? Blessings! Lisa in New England, USA
ReplyDeleteMake your own, Wow, Just Wonderful! The shop bought (I have been told, by a reliable apiarist source), contains ALOT of petro-chemical based ingredients. So we've been avoiding it and sticking with homemade playdough (I shared our recipe on my blog, recently).
ReplyDeleteI just LOVE your blog! Found you via The Magic Onions.♥
Thank you, thank you for sharing this recipe! I tried making some before, and it was horrible. Didn't work AT ALL. I'll have to give this recipe a whirl.
